Manizales聽is a very special city. Sitting high in the middle range of the Colombian Andes, it enjoys perpetual springtime amidst lush green mountains, overlooked by towering snow capped peaks, in one of only eight micro-climate regions in the world.聽 Consequently, a mere聽ten minute walk can take you from a cool and foggy neighborhood to one that is warm and balmy.
The city melds beautifully with its unique topography, its fascinating architecture an outgrowth of its inhabitants聮 determination to maintain a balance with nature while maximizing human comforts and world class culture, including regular theater offerings, symphonies, ballets, concerts and sporting events featuring some of the world聮s most famous performers.聽聽This is especially true during early January whenManizales聽hosts its world famous Feria (its theme song, Feria de Manizales, is a world famous paso doble).
While聽Manizales聽has a population in the half million range, it is blessed with the best aspects of a small town atmosphere and new residents quickly find themselves recognized and warmly greeted by new friends.聽聽Small town, however, does not describe its plentiful and varied commercial establishments, which range from a number of sophisticated shopping malls to unique boutiques and retail establishments of every description.
Like many cities in聽Latin America, Manizales has聽a European atmosphere聽with a twist reminiscent of the French Alps.聽聽Approximately ten percent of its half million inhabitants are students at the city聮s ten university campuses, a cosmopolitan milieu聽from numerous聽countries all over the world.聽聽Its principle landmark, one of the聽Western Hemisphere聮s largest gothic cathedrals, is located just above the Plaza de Bolivar, a beautiful square adorned with massive statuary and murals dedicated to one of the world聮s greatest freedom fighters, all adjacent to the Departmental Capitol.聽聽Above the cathedral sits a modern skyscraper that houses the central government聮s regional headquarters.
The聽Manizales聽region is聽a world famous ecotourism destination, with many local nature and ecological preserves.聽 These include the following:
Los Yarumos, named after a large tree species, the Yarumo, is a beautiful park and entertainment complex, including a large amphitheater, conference center, restaurants and ice skating ring.聽聽Like so many parts of Manizales, it contains beautiful views overlooking the city, with many hiking trails and nature walks, rock climbing walls聽and long stone slides filled with happily shrieking children (of all ages).
Reserva Ecol贸gica R铆o Blanco, a restricted cloud forest park within four kilometers from the Fundaci贸n Ecol贸gico Gabriel Arango Restrepo.聽 It is聽a preserve protecting Anetojos' bears but聽graced with flocks of hummingbirds sipping sugarwater at the finca within a few hundred meters of a mirador overlooking Manizales.
Ecoparque los Alc谩zares and many others.
Nightlife in聽Manizales聽is plentiful and varied with many outdoor restaurants and cafes, a number of which聽which cater to the city聮s university student population.聽 People watching is a well developed聽art form, especially in light of the reputation for beauty enjoyed by 聯Manizalitas聰.聽聽The Avenida Santander boasts many of city聮s best discos and restaurants, but two smaller entertainment clusters, the Batallon andMilan聽are favorites for many of the city聮s younger residents, especially students.
The area immediately surrounding聽Manizales聽offers starkly contrasting vacation resort opportunities.聽聽If winter is what you seek, the gleaming snow covered peaks of the Nevado del Ruiz glacier and its three inactive volcanic formations overlook the city from a safe but beautiful distance.聽聽Guided tours are easily arranged and overnight stays are possible.聽聽The view and eerie solitude are magnificent and awe inspiring, as is a large thermal lake near the summit.聽聽In marked contrast is Santagueda, about 40 minutes from the center of Manizales; a zone of perpetual summer with temperatures ranging from 75 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit and full of sunbathing and swimming opportunities.
One of the most popular areas in Santagueda is La Fonda where people of all the ages enjoy the weather while drinking beer or other beverages of all kinds, but especially the two world famous local specialties for the Licorera de Caldas, Aguardiente Cristal and Ron Viejo de Caldas.
The area is also extraordinary in the number and quality of natural thermal springs as close as five minutes from the city聮s center, a number of which have become full service world class resorts.聽聽Such resorts include the Termales del Oto帽o, the Termales de San Vicente, the聽聽Termales de聽Santa Rosa聽and the Termales del Nevado.聽聽Each contains cascade filled pools of steaming naturally heated mineral rich waters with putative curative qualities, where visitors from all over the world gather to soak and relax.
Unlike many other parts of the world including other areas in聽Colombia,聽water quality in Manizales is excellent; its聽water is among the ten top rated drinking waters in the world.聽聽If you're visiting the 'Los Nevados'聽Natural聽Park, ask for aguapanela con queso, a hot beverage made of sugar cane served with cheese.聽聽Also look for cheese ice cream, chorizos from聽Santa Rosa聽and obleas.
Experience life in this 24- hour city and you will never look back!
