Masters in Translation

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

To train researchers in the field of translation with a critical, analytical and creative view that will enable them to make good decisions during the translation process.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

  • To consolidate research groups in the field of translation with the common purpose of promoting research in this area, as well as the qualification of translation activities.
  • To provide students with a broad knowledge of the technological advances that have contributed to the expansion of the scope of translation.

THIS PROGRAM IS AIMED AT:

The program is aimed at professionals of any area with sufficient knowledge of a foreign language (English, French, Italian, Portuguese, German, Catalan, etc.) and with an interest in research and translation work. The following elements are required in order to be admitted to the program:

  • Graduate degree in any area of knowledge (photocopy of certificate).
  • Foreign applicants whose mother tongue is not Spanish must take and pass an institutional Spanish for Foreigners test.
  • Interview.
  • Curriculum Vitae.
  • Knowledge evaluation, where considered appropriate by the UAM®.
  • Specific program requirements as approved by the Academic Council.

OCCUPATIONAL PROFILE

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  • Participate actively in research groups in different areas that constitute the field of translation.
  • Undertake positions related to translation teaching.
  • Work as a professional translator in educational institutions and private companies.

PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

The Master of Translation will have a thorough knowledge of theoretical and applied aspects of translation. This program emphasizes the training of researchers engaged in translation who are aware of the need for remaining consistently up-to-date. As such, the graduate should consider their daily work as an inexhaustible source of research problems in translation and other related areas.

In order to obtain the Master's in Translation, the following requirements must be met:

  • Earn a cumulative grade average of three point five (3.5) and above.
  • Complete all credits of the curriculum.
  • Successfully pass and support their Master's thesis.

Translation and Terminology

Terminological variation, specialized phraseology, metaphor in specialized discourse, terminological competence.

Didactics of Translation and Terminology

Reading comprehension in translators, translation teaching using TICs, metacognitive strategies in the training of translators

Cognitive Processes of Translation

Analysis of metaphor processing at the level of brain zones activation during the translation process, analysis of the different types of memory employed in the translation process, analysis of the metacognitive strategies used by translators.

Textual Analysis and Translation

Description and analysis of electronic genres from a parallel corpus, analysis of the comprehension of a specific textual genre in the translation process, analysis of the textual functions in a parallel corpus.

REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Photocopy of ID card enlarged by 150 %, blood type classification (if not in the ID card).
  • Photocopy of degree certificate or professional qualification.
  • Current health insurance card or a valid certificate of adhesion to a social security system.
  • Photocopy of military service ID card enlarged by150% (where appropriate).
  • 2 ID-size photographs (on a blue background).
  • Receipt of payment.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • The necessary degree or diploma according to the demands of each program.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Interview
  • Knowledge assessment where deemed appropriate by the Autonoma University of Manizales.
  • For doctoral programs, proficiency in English reading comprehension.
  • Specific requirements outlined by each program as approved by the Academic Council.

ADDITIONAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ADMISSION OF NATIONAL AND FOREIGN STUDENTS WITH AN UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE OBTAINED ABROAD

  • Copy of passport for students without a Colombian ID card.
  • Spanish translation by an official translator of documents submitted in another language.
  • Certificates and diplomas must have the Apostille stamp issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country of origin or by the body in charge of this process, according to the Hague Convention. In the case of countries that do not belong to the Hague Convention, certificates and diplomas must be authenticated or bear the seal of the consul of Colombia in the country of origin, and be countersigned by the Colombian Foreign Ministry.
  • Student visa or a valid document for the corresponding academic period or a valid immigration card/resident card/ green card issued by the Colombian Administrative Department of Security (DAS) or the entity in charge of this process.
  • Certificate of Compulsory Health Insurance in Colombia or health insurance certificate from the country of origin.

Modality: On campus (a monthly meeting).
Duration: 54 credits
Schedule:
Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 12 m. and from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday from 8 a.m. to 12 m.

Inscription Cost: $218.300 COP
Whole Registration Cost: $16.729.200 COP
